What is Photobiomodulation Therapy?

PBM (Red Light Therapy) – previously known as Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) – is the application of red and near-infrared light to tissue where there is degeneration or injury, to improve repair and reduce inflammation and pain.
PBM Therapy does many things, but really it does just one thing and it does it very well…and that is, it reduces oxidative stress, and boosts ATP production in our cells. Oxidative Stress is accepted as the underlying trigger for most diseases and degenerative conditions. It is also a component in the inflammatory phase of acute and chronic injuries.

Over 700 Randomized Controlled Trials have been published using PBM devices, and the technology has featured in over 3000 laboratory studies. Ongoing research and clinical trials are showing that PBM therapy can be beneficial in treating cancer therapy side effects, chronic pain and inflammation, autoimmune conditions (Fibromyalgia, Lupus, Crohn’s), neurodegenerative disease such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, skin conditions (Psoriasis, acne, etc), Arthritis, Traumatic Brain Injury, Burns, Seasonal Affective Disorder, and many others.

Athletes are benefiting from faster rate of recovery from injuries and training. Increased strength and energy. Reduces DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) from hard workouts, as well as hitting new PR’s with little, or no change in their workout routine.

Most people also describe a boost in their mood, decreased stress/depression, and improved sleep.

PBM FAQ’s

Q: How many sessions are needed?

A: That depends on your goals and current condition. In general, acute injuries (sprains, abrasions, etc.) show rapid improvement and often resolve in 2-4 treatments. Long-term and chronic conditions may need up to 10 treatments to show significant benefits.

Q: How often should I do Red Light Therapy?

A: Most clients do 2-4 times per week until their goals are met, then reduce to 1-2 times per week for maintenance. For athletes with a rigorous workload, 3-5 times per week is recommended for optimal recovery.

Q: Are there any side effects?

A: No, treatment is non-toxic, non-invasive, and has no side effects.  It is safe and effective for most people.

Q: Are there any contraindications?

A: Treatment is NOT APPROPRIATE FOR THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS: pregnancy, epilepsy, active cancer lesions, and anyone taking photosensitive medications.

Q: Do you wear clothes?

A: You may disrobe to your level of comfort. The more light that touches your skin, the more effective the treatment.

Q: Do you need eye protection?

A: No. The wavelength of red and near-infrared light is actually healthy for your eyes.  You may want to close them and take a nap, though.

Q: What should I do before my session?

A: Remove all jewelry that could refract light or scratch the unit. Remove as much makeup as possible, and limit the use of lotions, especially ones with light-blocking agents. Hydration is vital to the success of the treatments, so please drink water throughout the day!

Q: What will I feel?

A: The lights themselves do not become warm; however your circulation increases throughout the treatment, so you may experience a feeling of warmth. A quick energy boost or feeling of euphoria is also possible.

Q: What should I do after my session?

A: HYDRATE!!  Water is essential for cellular processes, and your cells will be hard at work after PBM. Make sure to drink extra water and eat well so your cells have all the fuel they need to heal.

Q: What success markers should I look for?

A: Pain levels for acute or chronic conditions, improvements in color or texture of scars, improvements in skin texture and tone, quality of sleep, energy levels, recovery time post workout, and energy levels throughout the day are all good markers to track success.

Q: Where can I look at the research?
